Tuesday. A new model shipped again this week, faster than the last one, cheaper per task, fewer tool calls to get the same job done. Before you explain that to your team in English, let’s get the vocabulary straight.
📖 Word of the Day: Benchmark
- Word: benchmark
- IPA: /ˈbentʃ.mɑːrk/
- Vietnamese meaning: bài kiểm tra chuẩn dùng để đo và so sánh hiệu năng giữa các hệ thống hoặc phiên bản khác nhau
- Example sentences:
- “The new model jumped from 10% to 70% on that benchmark in a single release.”
- “We can’t just trust the vendor’s numbers — let’s run our own benchmark against real production tasks.”
- “A benchmark score tells you something, but it doesn’t tell you how the model behaves on your actual data.”

🗂️ Vocabulary Table — Tool-Calling & Agent Efficiency
| Phrase | Vietnamese | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tool call | lệnh gọi công cụ mà agent thực hiện để hoàn thành một bước | ”This task used to take fourteen tool calls — now it takes ten.” |
| Token | đơn vị nhỏ nhất của văn bản mà model xử lý (gần bằng một từ hoặc một phần từ) | “We’re burning through tokens faster than expected on this workflow.” |
| Overhead | chi phí phát sinh không trực tiếp tạo ra giá trị (thời gian, tài nguyên) | “Every extra tool call adds overhead — latency and cost — even if the task still succeeds.” |
| Regression | sự suy giảm hiệu năng hoặc chất lượng so với phiên bản trước | ”The new model is faster on paper, but watch for regressions on edge cases.” |
| Instrument (verb) | gắn công cụ đo lường vào hệ thống để theo dõi hành vi | ”We instrumented the pipeline so we can see tokens and steps per task, not just cost.” |
🔊 Pronunciation Guide
Benchmark breaks into two syllables: BENCH-mark, stress on the first.
- bench — like the seat, /bentʃ/ — the “ch” is a soft “tch” sound, tongue behind the teeth.
- mark — /mɑːrk/ — open “ah” sound, roll straight into the “r.”
- Say them together fast, no pause: BENCH-mark, not “bench… mark.”
Vietnamese speakers sometimes add a vowel after “bench” — resist that. It’s one clean beat, then the second syllable.
Practice sentence (read aloud 3 times):
“Before we celebrate the benchmark score, let’s check if it holds up on our own workload.”

- “Each extra retry adds __________ we didn’t budget for.”
- “Let’s __________ the agent so we can see exactly where the tokens go.”
- “The team found a __________ in accuracy after the last update — we’re rolling it back.”
Show answers
- overhead
- instrument
- regression
Exercise 2 — Translate to English
- “Chúng tôi cần chạy benchmark của riêng mình, không chỉ tin vào số liệu của nhà cung cấp.”
- “Mỗi lệnh gọi công cụ đều tốn thêm chi phí thời gian và token.”
- “Chúng tôi phát hiện một sự suy giảm hiệu năng sau bản cập nhật mới nhất.”
Show answers
- “We need to run our own benchmark, not just trust the vendor’s numbers.”
- “Every tool call adds extra time and token overhead.”
- “We found a regression after the latest update.”
💬 Idiom of the Day: “Move the needle”
Vietnamese: tạo ra tác động hoặc thay đổi đủ lớn để được coi là có ý nghĩa, đáng kể.
Examples:
- “A 2% latency improvement won’t move the needle — we need something bigger.”
- “Cutting tool calls in half actually moved the needle on our monthly bill.”

🎯 Daily Challenge
Next time someone shares a benchmark result in standup, ask out loud: “Does that hold up on our own workload, or just theirs?” One question, but it’s the one that separates marketing numbers from real ones.
