Happy Tuesday! We’ve covered hallucinations, inference, and agent orchestration on past Tuesdays — today we go one layer deeper: the vocabulary engineers actually use when they’re deciding how to run a model in production, not just call an API.
📖 Word of the Day: Quantize
- Word: quantize
- IPA: /ˈkwɒn.taɪz/
- Vietnamese meaning: lượng tử hóa (giảm độ chính xác số học của mô hình, ví dụ từ 16-bit xuống 4-bit, để chạy nhanh hơn và nhẹ hơn)
- Example sentences:
- “We quantized the 70B model down to 4-bit so it fits on a single GPU.”
- “Quantizing too aggressively hurt accuracy on our edge-case prompts.”
- “Have you tried the quantized version? It’s half the size with almost no quality loss.”

Vocabulary Table
| Phrase | Vietnamese | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Throughput | thông lượng, số lượng xử lý được trong một khoảng thời gian | ”Batching requests together roughly doubled our throughput.” |
| Checkpoint | điểm lưu trạng thái mô hình trong quá trình huấn luyện | ”Roll back to last week’s checkpoint — this one regressed.” |
| Overfit | học vẹt, mô hình khớp quá sát với dữ liệu huấn luyện | ”The model overfit on our tiny dataset and failed in production.” |
| Multimodal | đa phương thức (xử lý được cả văn bản, hình ảnh, âm thanh…) | ”The new multimodal model can read the screenshot and explain the bug.” |
| Cold start | khởi động lạnh, độ trễ khi mô hình chưa được load sẵn vào bộ nhớ | ”Cold start latency is the real killer for serverless inference.” |
🗣 Pronunciation Guide
“Quantize” breakdown — /ˈkwɒn.taɪz/:
- Stress on the first syllable: QUAN-tize, not quan-TIZE
- “Quan-” rhymes with “swan,” not “swan-tay” — keep the vowel short and rounded
- “-tize” rhymes with “size” — a full, voiced /z/ at the end, not an /s/
Practice sentence (read aloud 3x):
“We quantized the checkpoint to cut cold-start latency and boost throughput, without triggering the overfitting we saw last time.”
That’s a mouthful on purpose — production AI conversations really do chain this many technical words in one breath.
✍️ Exercise 1: Fill in the Blank
Fill each blank with one word or phrase from today’s list: quantize, throughput, checkpoint, overfit, multimodal, cold start.
- “Our GPU costs dropped 40% after we started serving the _______ version of the model.”
- “The demo needs to _______ handle both the photo and the caption — pick a _______ model.”
- “If validation loss keeps rising while training loss keeps falling, the model is starting to _______.”
- “Restore from the last stable _______ before you retrain.”
- “Users complained the first request after a deploy was slow — that’s _______.”

✍️ Exercise 2: Translate to English
Translate these Vietnamese sentences using today’s vocabulary.
- “Chúng tôi đã lượng tử hóa mô hình để chạy trên điện thoại.”
- “Thông lượng của hệ thống tăng gấp đôi sau khi tối ưu batching.”
- “Mô hình này bị học vẹt vì tập dữ liệu quá nhỏ.”

- “We quantized the model to run it on a phone.”
- “The system’s throughput doubled after we optimized batching.”
- “This model overfit because the dataset was too small.”
💬 Idiom of the Day: “Cut corners”
- Vietnamese meaning: làm tắt, bớt xén công đoạn để tiết kiệm thời gian/chi phí, thường mang ý tiêu cực
- Example 1: “Quantizing to 2-bit to save cost was cutting corners — accuracy tanked.”
- Example 2: “Don’t cut corners on the eval set just because the deadline is close.”

🎯 Tuesday Challenge
In your next standup or PR description, describe a performance change using at least two of today’s words — “This cuts cold-start latency” or “We quantized the model to improve throughput.” Precise vocabulary makes technical updates sound more credible, in any language.
