PRODUCT CASE STUDY
Hive
A self-hosted agent workspace focused on checked deliverables, explicit approvals and bounded costs.
- Role
- Product and technical lead — recurring agent workflows and verification
- For
- Small teams and builders with repeatable agent workflows

The user problem
Agent orchestration alone does not make repeated work dependable. A useful workflow needs a checked result, an accountable approval step and a cost limit that works before spending happens.
Product decisions
Competitive research narrowed the product to verified recurring work. A producer does the work and a checker reviews it; arbitration is reserved for disagreement. Approvals and budget pauses constrain autonomy instead of relying on a prompt alone.
Engineering trade-offs
Python standard library, SQLite and a Preact interface support a deliberately compact self-hosted system. Rooms, workflows, retrieval, evaluations and schedules organize work. Model routing, observable failures and explicit permission boundaries matter as much as orchestration.
What exists today
Published playbooks document personal operational use, recurring routines and implementation lessons. Private operational details are omitted.
Evidence & next steps
Implementation evidence is separate from measured user or business outcomes. Next: validate the complete user journey and its results.
