Six days, six lessons — git vocabulary, agent benchmarks, sharding, framing a decision, negotiating a number, and being witty at a party. Sunday is for making sure any of it actually stuck.
📖 Word of the Day: Benchmark
This one gets the spotlight twice this week — Tuesday it meant a test for your AI agent’s performance, Friday it meant a reference number for your salary. Same word, two completely different rooms. That’s worth drilling once more before it slips.
- Word: benchmark (noun / verb)
- IPA: /ˈbentʃ.mɑːrk/
- Vietnamese: mức chuẩn hoặc bài kiểm tra dùng để so sánh — có thể là hiệu năng hệ thống, hoặc mức lương thị trường, tuỳ ngữ cảnh.
Example sentences:
- “We ran our own benchmark instead of trusting the vendor’s numbers.” (engineering)
- “Levels.fyi gave me a benchmark before I countered the offer.” (career)
- “Without a benchmark, you’re arguing from nothing — get a number first, in either conversation.”

🔊 Pronunciation Guide: Benchmark
Break it into two pieces: bench /bentʃ/ + mark /mɑːrk/. The “ch” in bench is a hard “ch” like in “lunch,” not a soft “sh.” Stress sits on the first syllable — BENCH-mark, not bench-MARK.
Practice sentence — read it aloud 3 times:
“We don’t have a benchmark yet, so let’s run one before we commit to the new version.”
✍️ Exercise 1 — Fill in the blank
Use one word from the table above in each sentence.
- “Can you _______ that code for now? We need a clean branch for the demo.”
- “Every _______ holds about 50 million rows before we split it again.”
- “He _______ the outage as a process gap, not a blame conversation.”
- “Her _______ reply had the whole room laughing in two seconds.”
- “Check Glassdoor for a salary _______ before you respond to the offer.”

🎯 Today’s Challenge
Pick one word from the table — “benchmark” is the easy one since you now have two meanings for it. Say one sentence out loud using the engineering meaning, then immediately say a second sentence using the career meaning. Same word, two contexts, no notes.
