Saturday morning, coffee in hand, no standup to run. Today’s session isn’t about getting a message across clearly — it’s about the stuff that makes a conversation actually fun: light teasing, quick comebacks, knowing when a joke landed. That’s a different skill than “correct English,” and it’s the one that makes people enjoy talking to you.
📖 Word of the Day: Witty
- Word: witty
- IPA: /ˈwɪti/
- Vietnamese meaning: dí dỏm, hóm hỉnh — thông minh và hài hước cùng lúc, biết phản ứng nhanh và dùng chữ khéo
- Example 1: “He gave such a witty reply that even the person he was teasing laughed.”
- Example 2: “She’s known for her witty comments in meetings — sharp, but never mean.”
- Example 3: “The best man’s speech was short but witty, and it got the biggest laugh of the night.”
- Listen & practice: Cambridge Dictionary — witty · YouGlish — witty in real speech
Vocabulary for Casual Banter
| Phrase | Vietnamese | Example |
|---|---|---|
| You crack me up | Bạn làm tôi cười quá | “Stop, you crack me up — I can’t even respond to that.” |
| I’m just messing with you | Mình chỉ đùa thôi | “Relax, I’m just messing with you — your presentation was fine.” |
| That’s a good one! | Câu đó hay đó! | “Wait, that’s a good one — did you just come up with that?” |
| I see what you did there | Mình hiểu ý đùa của bạn rồi | “Ha, I see what you did there with the pun.” |
| Don’t take it too seriously | Đừng để ý quá | “He says stuff like that to everyone, don’t take it too seriously.” |
🗣️ Pronunciation Guide
Witty is short — two syllables, WIT-ee — but Vietnamese speakers often stretch the “t” sound or soften it into a “d,” which makes it sound like “widdy” and loses the crispness. In fast American English, that middle “t” does become a light tap, close to a soft “d,” but the “WIT” part still needs a clean, short vowel — almost like “wit” + “it” said quickly together.
Practice sentence (read aloud 3 times):
“She’s one of the wittiest people I know — she always has a comeback ready.”
First pass: slow, syllable by syllable. Second pass: normal speed. Third pass: say it the way you’d actually compliment a friend right after they made you laugh — a little surprised, a little impressed.
